Rabbi Jamie Korngold plays guitar at Shabbat services in Boulder, ColoradoAfter brief introductions, we hike at a moderate pace for approximately an hour. (Round trip hike time approx. 2 hours) As we hike up the trail, we have time to chat and get to know each other. On Adventure Rabbi hikes you will discover a group of fascinating and inspirational people, eager to meet new people and explore their Judaism in unique ways.

Occasionally during the hike, we take a break to catch our breath and admire the view. Rabbi Korngold often adds a natural history lesson, a reading from Jewish text, or commentary on the theology of ecology (how to experience God's presence in the wilderness).

Halfway through the hike, we pause for a half-hour service. The service is filled with familiar prayers and songs, accompanied by nature readings from Jewish tradition.

Rabbi Korngold often shares a teaching from the weekly Torah portion and discusses the power of observing Shabbat, the day of rest, outdoors.

Toward the end of the service, we take a few moments of quiet introspection. It is a chance for each of us to contemplate the sounds, smells and sights of the wilderness around us.

After a bit of chocolate, we return an hour hike down the trail, always arriving at or before our posted ending time.

What:

We will hike on the Mesa Trail at a moderate pace, during one of the most beautiful times of the day. We find inspirational natural synagogues to enjoy a 20 –30 minute Shabbat service, filled with liturgy that has carefully been chosen to help us appreciate our natural surroundings. Afterwards, join us for a bite to eat and a chance to chat.

Inclement Weather: Our rain policy is wear raingear! We hike rain, snow, sleet or shine. This is the Adventure Rabbi Program after all. That said, if the weather is really uncomfortable and the group is small as a result, we may shorten the hike.
